The Inner Door is an excerpt from my book, Joy Beyond Belief: Transcending the Limits of Faith through Prayer and Meditation. It explores the inner meaning of Jesus's advice in Chapter 6 of the Gospel of Matthew concerning prayer and how it can lead to what the 20th-century Trappist monk Thomas Merton calls “transcendent experience,” which, in his words,  is "to penetrate the reality of all that is, to grasp the meaning of one’s own existence, to find one’s true place in the scheme of things, to relate perfectly to all that is in a relation of identity and love.”
